About Us

Founded in February 2021, Hoofprints in the Sand (HITS) is an equine-based nonprofit organization dedicated to serving Veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Founder Sarah Lustig, a registered nurse (RN), established HITS in recognition of the powerful connection between humans and horses. The organization was created to bridge gaps in support services by offering meaningful, consistent, and extended engagement for those often left waiting or facing limited options.
The Making of HITS
For Veterans with PTSD, horses provide a unique path to healing. Horses facilitate communication, trust, and unyielding confidence, empowering heroes to reclaim their lives.

Working with the horses brought me so much joy and confidence. It is so special to develop that connection and trust. The horses are so beautiful and the farm is so peaceful.

Thank you for giving me hope again. I am encouraged to live my best life moving forward. I can't change the past, but I can choose to make the best of my future.

The best health centered place I know. I am a volunteer here and a retired military veteran with service connected disabilities including PTSD. For me, being in the natural world, the forest, farm land, animals, domestic and wildlife, the wind and sunshine...all of it is a therapy opening the sense of thankfulness and connection to things good and profitable in the earth.
